Do Turtles and Tortoises Bite?

Yes, tortoises and turtles can bite. In captivity, this most often happens accidentally during hand feeding or when they mistake fingers or objects for food. These are usually “test bites” driven by curiosity rather than aggression. At Kidspace Children’s Museum, we love to explore animal behavior!

In some cases, bites may also occur if the animal feels threatened or is handled in a way that causes stress.

For example, during enclosure cleaning, a Russian tortoise may investigate objects like gloves or fingers using small exploratory bites if something appears edible or unfamiliar.

Why turtles and tortoises bite

  • Accidental bites – During feeding or when mistaking objects for food
  • Curiosity bites (“test bites”) – Exploring unfamiliar objects in their environment
  • Defensive bites – When they feel threatened or are handled improperly
  • Territorial or seasonal behavior – More common in some males during breeding season
