Enrique “Ricky” Chavez
Artist-in-Residence
Enrique “Ricky” Chavez is a Mexican-American puppeteer, puppet builder and a commercial director / DP based out of Los Angeles. Self-taught in puppetry and puppet building, Ricky is eager and excited to create as much as possible. More than anything, Ricky loves using puppetry to spread and experience joy – he’s always got a puppet on him.
This alebrije was a collaborative effort between Ricky and his father, Hector Chavez. Hector designed the internal mechanisms and optimized structuring, while Ricky handled the character design and the fabrication. Excited by the endless possibilities that come with the creation of a custom alebrije, they wanted to prioritize vibrancy in color, character, and motion – all while respecting the rich and imaginative foundation developed by Pedro Linares. Ricky loves the magic that exists when people get to interact with puppets and is excited to share this with the world!
All about Alebrijes
Alebrijes are colorful sculptures from Mexico depicting fantastical creatures with various animal features. Originating in the 1940s from artist Pedro Linares, these vibrant pieces are made from paper-mache or wood, showcasing intricate patterns and exaggerated forms. Today, alebrijes are celebrated worldwide, influencing art, culture, and popular media, while embodying a rich tradition of Mexican folk art and craftsmanship.
