Want S'mores?

It’s National S’mores day! We all think of s’mores as the fun, messy, sticky, gooey snack that you make when you go camping or over a fire pit. We love the crunchy cracker, melty chocolate, and warm toasted marshmallow. What if you want to indulge in this iconic treat when there isn’t a fire pit handy? Or it’s the middle of the day when the s’mores craving hits? Harness the power of the sun and make a solar oven to “cook” up some fun s’mores treats!

Solar oven supplies:

  • Empty pizza box

  • Black construction paper

  • Scissors

  • Marker

  • Aluminum foil

  • Tape

Step 1: Cut the black construction paper to fit in the bottom of the pizza box.

Step 2: Use the marker to trace a three-sided flap in the top of the pizza box.

Step 3: Use the scissors to cut out the flap in the top of the pizza box.

Step 4: Fold back the flap you cut and wrap it in the aluminum foil. Use the tape to secure the foil to the box.

Your solar oven is ready to use!

Step 5: Assemble s’mores in the pizza box, so they fit within the area of the flap, close the lid but keep the flap open.

S’mores Supplies

  • 2 graham crackers, broken in half to form squares

  • 1 chocolate bar broken into squares that fit on the crackers

  • Marshmallows, 1 for each s’more

Step 6: Place the solar oven outside in a sunny space with the foil covered flap open and facing the sun. Use the foil flap to focus the sun onto the s’mores. The foil acts like a solar panel to focus the sun’s heat. Adjust your panel and box to maximize the sun’s reflection focused onto the s’mores in your box. The sun will melt the chocolate and soften the marshmallow. It won’t be toasted like with a campfire, but it will still be gooey! This can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes depending on how intense the sun is that day.

Step 7: Enjoy!
