Magic in the Air
May 12, 2023, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Let’s fly together!
All spring long, Kidspace is celebrating butterflies and pollinators and the role they play in our Southern California ecosystem. Now, we’re inviting everyone to join us in creating a fluttery, flying tribute to the monarch, that lovely Lepidoptera! Our artist-in-residence, Christopher Lutter, will lead a community art project for Kidspace visitors and volunteers to create a giant interactive swarm of butterflies he calls, Magic in the Air.
Guests will work side-by-side with Christopher at Kidspace to upcycle waste-stream materials into vivid, butterfly sculptures, exploring silkscreening, metalwork, and painting. The finished kinetic sculpture will be installed by Kidspace at Descanso Gardens this June as part of Living in a Wildlife Corridor, an exhibition curated by Arroyos and Foothills Conservancy to explore the interface of native creatures and habitats with the urban environment of our region. Your contribution to Magic in the Air will be on display in Descanso’s Boddy House this summer before returning to Kidspace in 2024.
Christopher will be in residence at Kidspace from May 12–17. Drop-in activities will be open to the public May 12–14 between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm, and May 17 between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.
